Here’s a very interesting review of three apologetical books on the Papacy – two of them Orthodox (The Truth by Clark Carlton, and Two Paths by Michael Whelton) and one Catholic (On This Rock by Stephen Ray) – by Professor William J. Tighe (who has commented on this blog).
Dr. Tighe,
What’s your take on Whelton’s treatment of Vatican I?
I don’t know Dr. Tighe’s take (although I hope we will provide it). But I do know that James Likoudis has dealt with this at length in his book-length critique of Mar. Whelton’s book.
Oops, typos–shold read “I hope he will provide it.”
And should be “Mr.” not “Mar.” LOL!
Proof of brain-deadness…time for bed!
I don’t remember his take on Vatican I, to be frank, as I didn’t keep the book after I’d reviewed it. He wrote to *Touchstone* to controvery some of the things I said in the review, and I write a “reasserting” reply, but the editor allowed me only a brief response. The exchange was in the next issue, or the next-but-one. Perhaps it can be found online; I never checked.
Hello Cathedra Unitatis
I felt the need to pass this letter on. It was published by the monks of Mt Athos. You may want to put this up as a new topic. The point is this is what is coming from the spiritual center of Orthodoxy.
So again the issue becomes based upon what authority are these monks correct or incorrect. W/O the God given Papacy this occurs w/o censure, and how do Orthodox know this is true or not??
Here it is
An Open Letter to the Holy Abbots and the Holy Representatives of the Sacred Twenty Monasteries in the Holy Community of the Holy Mount Athos
The So-Called Kelliotes Letter to the Sacred Twenty Athonite Monasteries (2006)
[Note to John: Because of the letter's length, I have replaced the text with a link to the letter. – CU]
John – As an Orthodox Christian, I am very troubled by the Athonite response to the Pope’s visit to Constantinople. The joint letter from all twelve of the monasteries of Athos to Patriarch Bartholomew was rather balanced compared to this “Kelliotes Letter.”

I have read the “official’ letter from Mt Athos. While the tone is a little less than the other letter the exact same theme is expressed.
The Pope of Rome is a heretic and the church has heresies such as
Filioque
Papal Primacy
Created Grace
Please tell me how on earth can the Western Church for so many ceenturies teach clearly the filioque, Popes speak unequivocably of papal primacy, the Western Fathers teach grace as they did….all this occuring in the 400′s to the 900′s and yet the East and West were united???
EVen St Maximus spoke in favor of how the Western Fathers spoke of the filioque.
In order to believe the Anthonite monks I would have to believe that for over 600yrs the united church was in heresy??
And how about created grace…never understood this…how can the orthodox say the the Papists teach no real union with Christ, when it is plain as day that the teaching of theosis is clearly taught by the Catholic faith…just a quick look into the sainst of the Church such as St John of the Cross, St. Therese of Avila, St Bernard show this idea to be absolutley false.
