An interesting story from Kath.net:
According to well-informed circles in the Vatican, there will be a new document by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on a hot topic. It will deal with the self-conception of the Church and will supposedly be released July 10th. This document will state the unique character of the Catholic Church and that Protestant churches are not churches in the narrow sense. The topic will be the sentence “Ecclesia subsistit in Ecclesia catholica” (“The Church of Christ subsists in/is realized in the Catholic Church”) from the Vatican II document Lumen gentium.
Is this a purely Western document? Does the ecclesiology taught here have ramifications for others than the separated Roman children?
It has always been my contention that ecclesiology is the last unexplored “land” of Protestantism.
B
Pope Benedict is on a roll! The motu on papal elections, the motu on the ancient Rite, and now this!
He just kicked over the Progressive beehive…and is promptly going on vacation LOL.
Barnabas –
The report mentions only a reassertion of the idea that Protestants do not have “true particular churches” as the Orthodox do (according to Rome). I wouldn’t be surprised, however, if it contains a clarification about the propriety of Catholics using the language of “Sister Churches” to apply to the Orthodox Churches.
